The Mainsheet - February 2022

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS
I wish to express my thanks to the many that have renewed their membership. It takes all of us to commit talents, work and funding in order to support our club’s programs well.

The year has started off with the Commodore’s Ball. It was an evening of celebrating the previous year’s accomplishments. The meal, the awards presentation, the camaraderie and dancing was great. Congratulations to Eric our Jr Staff Commodore for doing such a nice job.

You will be pleased to know that in addition to the traditional there are various new activities being planned for your enjoyment and participation. The effort to re-establish a nautical library has begun. If you are interested in contributing to this effort I encourage you to step up.  Channel Islands nature and history themed activities are being researched. I hope to see you at club dinners as they are a delicious. Plus the Super Bowl watching party February 13, promises to to be good fun! If you have any ideas for more fun please share.

In response to the vacancy for Vice Commodore, according to Section 7.4.5 of the AYC Bylaws, the Board is woking toward filling the office. The nominating committee has gone through numerous possible candidates and will bring a qualified nominee up for a vote of approval by the Board at the Board of Directors Meeting  this month. I am really appreciative of those that volunteered their efforts to keep the club activities going without  someone at the helm.

As we continue to update our OD schedules our main mode of contact is your email or phone. Please make sure we have the correct information. Also place the following in your contacts to assure you receive all our email communication:

FROM THE REAR COMMODORE

This year promises to be the best year ever, your Bridge and Board members are very excited about the upcoming events planned for this year.

The 2022 Racing Schedule is available as a paper copy at the club or races can be found in the Events tab on the AYC website. The cruising notices will go out via email the first of each month beginning in April, weather dependent. Our most successful trips have been day trips to Frenchy’s on Anacapa Island. If you are planning a cruise and have a time and destination, please let the club know. It’s always nice to have the company of other likeminded sailors. Pick a place you’ve never been and would like to explore, Santa Barbara Island?

We are also planning to schedule guest speakers at the Club for talks ranging from upwind sail trim to the history of our local islands. If you have a request for a specific topic please let me know.

Eric Schwartz is planning to continue holding Open house dates for his Meet-Up group, STEM TO STERN in effort to help increase club membership, let’s all support him.

This year Opening Day will be on April 3rd. We would like as many boats as possible to participate in the parade and show your support for AYC, more information to come.

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being your Rear Commodore this year, please don’t hesitate to send me your ides or suggestions.

Michael Gram, AYC Rear Commodore

ROUNDING THE MARK

AYC YouTube and Web Presence

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube have become part of our club’s communication efforts. We have a beautiful webpage and are now expanding to other media outlets. It is our goal to reach members and potential members through the use of the media. We will be able to share events in real time. We will be able to share video and document events for members and friends to access from the comfort of their homes.

Our YouTube page was inaugurated last month. As of today we have more than 35 subscribers. We need to break the threshold of 100 subscribers in order to have a personalized YouTube address. We are asking you to take a moment and go to YouTube and subscribe. We also are asking you to share with friends and family members with the request that they subscribe. There is NO COST to do this. You may opt out of notifications.

Subscription is easy.  Click on the highlighted link. This will take you to the first video on the page. You will see a box that says “Subscribe” under the video. Click on that box and input a valid email. That’s all there is.

We look forward to posting videos from Wet Wednesdays, Club Events, and other videos of interest to club members. Thank you for your kind support of this effort and thank you for subscribing to the AYC YouTube Page.

Pablo Crandall Plasencia, AYC Director
